Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy are Olympic rowers from Skibbereen, Co. Cork.
The pair won gold in the men’s lightweight double sculls at both the 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Olympics.
Paul and his older brother Gary O’Donovan also won silver at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Paul’s irreverent post-race interviews became legendary, including one after victory in 2016 in which he used the phrase “pull like a dog” (in reference to pulling on an oar).
This artwork was added to the box on Liberty Street after a sustained summer-long clean-up of North Main Street and surrounding areas which had fallen into bad condition after the pandemic.
