Set up in 1990 by graduates of the Crawford College of Art & Design, Backwater Artists Group is an artist-led organisation based on Wandesford Quay in the centre of Cork City, where we share a premises with Cork Printmakers and The Lavit Gallery.
Backwater provides high quality, affordable individual purpose built studios with security of tenure and access to facilities for artists. Facilities include a darkroom, a digital suite, a woodwork area and an exhibition space, Studio 12.
In total, Backwater facilitates 38 artists in 28 studios, comprising of 6 sculpture bays and 22 painting/mixed media studios. A further 6 artists use our Darkroom.
Our exhibition space, Studio 12 gives studio artists at Backwater Artists Group the opportunity to present new work to peers, curators, collectors and the general public. The space is also used as a project space, a communal meeting point and a venue for hosting talks, events and workshops. Studio 12 also supports non-studio artists and aims to increase collaboration and engagement with the wider artistic community and the general public through exhibitions and outreach events.
Studio 12 is open to the public from 10am – 5pm, Tuesday – Friday, during exhibitions.
