Celebrate Halloween’s Ancient Origins in Cork!


Halloween’s origins are deeply rooted in Ireland, with traditions and customs that date back millennia to ancient Celtic practices. Originally known as the festival of Samhain, it marked the end of the harvest season and the dawn of winter—a time when the veil between this world and the next was at its thinnest.  As part of #Ireland's Ancient East, Cork is the perfect place to explore this mystical past while enjoying some seriously spooky events!

Here’s what’s happening across Cork this Halloween:

Spike Island After Dark 
Dare to explore the haunted halls of Spike Island on an eerie night tour. Discover the chilling history of this former prison… if you’re brave enough!




 Spike Spookfest Trail
For the younger adventurers, Spike Island also hosts a kid-friendly Spookfest Trail, full of fun challenges and surprises that the whole family will enjoy.




Dragon of Shandon Parade 
Cork City will be filled with giants, ghouls, and the legendary Dragon of Shandon! This mesmerising parade is not to be missed. Taking place from Shandon Street on the 31st of October at 7pm.




Leap Scarecrow Festival 
From 21 October, Leap will be transformed with creative scarecrows lining the streets and a full program of events running through 3 November, perfect for families and Halloween lovers.




Youghal Spirit of Samhain Festival
Experience the ancient customs of Samhain in the historic coastal town of Youghal, where bonfires, folklore, and storytelling revive Ireland’s deep-rooted Halloween traditions.




Kinsale An Tulca Halloween Festival
A delightful celebration of the changing of the seasons. From Lantern workshops and mask making to two street parades...the Traditional Trick or Treat Parade with performances, prizes and the famous Dreadful Disco to the gorgeous evocative Lantern Parade that ends with a magical water performances. Great fun for the whole family, all events are free. This are joyous, inclusive, creative community orientated events.  




The Black Cat Treasure Hunt at Cork GAOL 
Cork City Gaol is getting into the spooooky spirit again this Halloween when ghosts, skeletons and witches invade the old prison. The Black Cat Treasure Hunt runs from Saturday, 26th October to Friday, 1st November, 10am – 5pm daily.  Wanda the Witch will also be at the Gaol to look for her missing black cats , she would love it if you came to say hello and help her find her cats!  Children are welcome to dress up for the occasion.
