A little bit about Maja
I was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia. For those of you who are unfamiliar with European geography, Slovenia is nestled between southern Austria and northeastern Italy on the north and west and Croatia on the south.
My family struggled economically at times. And, like many children, I had a troubled childhood, thinking the world does not understand me at all. I
was always attracted to drawing. It was not only my outlet; it was my escape. I managed to attend some art classes with renowned Slovenian painters, and took art in school. I developed a surrealist drawing style in which I could express ideas and feelings that felt distinctive – that felt like mine. And at 19, I left home for good.
I continued to explore art, and also myself, obtaining a degree in psychology. At the same time, I expanded art making to include sculptures of all kinds – works in wood, clay and plaster.
The challenges and pleasures of working directly and viscerally in materials satisfied my heart, my hands and my soul. I often worked for hours with no sensation of time passing.
In 2018, I emigrated to Ireland and now live in a beautiful fishing village on the coast. I spend every spare minute in my studio. And my goal of creating art that represents higher aesthetic and spiritual levels is still with me in everything I touch.
Maja Exhibition is open daily from 9am to 5pm. entry is free.
