Seun Kuti and Fela’s Egypt 80 will perform on The Everyman stage as part of the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival.
Seun Kuti, the youngest son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, has dedicated his life to preserving and expanding his father’s musical and political legacy. Born in 1983, he began performing with his father’s band, Egypt 80, at age nine and became the band’s leader after Fela’s death in 1997. Seun blends his father’s songs with his own compositions, incorporating various African musical traditions.
His debut album, Seun Kuti & Fela’s Egypt 80, was released in 2008, followed by Many Things later that year, both receiving critical acclaim. His 2011 album From Africa with Fury: Rise, co-produced by Brian Eno, marked his breakthrough, appearing on international charts.
Seun’s music remains politically charged and innovative, earning a global following.
In 2022, he released the successful EP African Dreams, featuring Black Thought. In 2023, he collaborated with Janelle Monáe on her Grammy-nominated album and appeared on Talib Kweli and Madlib’s Liberation 2. His remix of ‘BadMan Lighter’ with Black Thought and Vic Mensa reached over 1 million Spotify listeners. NPR praises him for his infectious grooves and political songwriting, continuing to honour and evolve his father’s Afrobeat legacy.
